In conjunction with SCIENCE CASTLE in MALAYSIA 2019, Leave a Nest Malaysia Sdn. Bhd. had conducted a Science and Technology Workshop on 14th April 2019 at Malaysian-Japan International Institute of Technology (MJIIT-UTM) during the second day of the event. This SCIENCE CASTLE Workshop was also joined by our SCIENCE CASTLE in MALAYSIA 2019 partners, My Conceptual Robotic Sdn. Bhd. and Centre for Artificial Intelligence and Robotics (CAIRO-UTM). The objective of this workshop is to nurture science research to the students, introduce students to the actual research environment at university and expose the student to the high-end machines and new technology.

This SCIENCE CASTLE Workshop offered 3 types of workshops consist of Discover Your Microbial World, 3D printing and Explore the Wonders of Robotics and Drone. It was participated by 46 students and 9 teachers from 7 schools. The schools are from SMK Pasir Gudang 2, SMK Bako, SMK Kota Kemuning, Sekolah Tun Fatimah, SM Sains Tengku Abdullah, Hornsbridge International School and SM Usahawan Al-Amin. The students are divided into 3 groups and have the chance to participate in all workshop activities.

Highlight for Workshop

Workshop1 : Discover Your Microbial World
The first workshop was run by our Leave a Nest Malaysia member, Dr. Nurul Syazwani binti Ahmad Sabri. It was held at our new Nest-Bio Venture Lab. Nest-Bio Venture lab is a lab under Leave a Nest Malaysia Sdn Bhd with the collaboration of MJIIT-UTM to provide a platform for the next generation to carry out their research.

This workshop aims to give the students a chance to discover types of microorganisms that exist on their belongings. During this workshop, students learned about microorganisms and types of microorganisms in our surrounding. Students also have a chance to run an experiment to discover types of microorganisms that exist on their belongings during the workshop. In the lab experiment, the students needed to collect microorganisms on their belongings using a cotton bud, swipe it to the petri dish containing nutrient agar and sealed the petri dish using parafilm. The students will receive a result of the type of microorganisms in their belongings within 3 days after the experiment. Before the end of the Microbial Workshop, students have the lab tour and being introduced to advanced equipment at the lab.

Workshop 2 : 3D Printing
The second workshop was conducted by Mr. Muhammad Basril bin Muhammad Asri from My Conceptual Robotic (MyCRO) Sdn Bhd at Sakura Room, level 4, MJIIT building. This workshop helped the students to understand about 3D Printing technology, 3D Printing application and different types of 3D Printing technology. During this workshop, students enjoyed learning the structures of 3D printer. The students also have the chance to operate the 3D printer by themselves with the supervision of Mr. Basril and make their own 3D printed keychain. Before the end of 3D printing workshop, students  were given a quiz using a Kahoot! apps to test the student understanding about 3D printing.

Workshop 3 : Explore the Wonders of Robotics and Drone
The third workshop was conducted by Dr. Zool Hilmi Ismail from Center for Artificial Intelligence and Robotic (CAIRO-UTM) at Robotics Lab, MJIIT-UTM. The objective of this workshop is to demonstrate the advanced technology of robotics and drone for students to learn on the mechanisms and core technology behind it. Students were introduced to the friendly humanoid robot called Pepper, Nao Robot and also Yuneec Drone. The student experienced communicate with the Pepper robot and saw the tai chi performance by Nao Robot. During this workshop, students also learned about the application of Drone in industry, how the programmer program the robot and the importance of Artificial Intelligence for the robot.

We received encouraging feedback from the teachers and students regarding this SCIENCE CASTLE Workshop Day. Mrs. Nor Azurah Jalil, teacher from SMK Bako, Kuching, Sarawak shared that SMK Bako students were very interested with the workshop especially Robotic workshop where they learned more about Humanoid robot, drone and Artificial intelligence. She also advises to the teachers and parents, that they should support their children or kids on what their children interested to do for their project.

We hope students will enjoy and they will be more interested to explore the world of sciences and technologies. We believe this SCIENCE CASTLE Workshop Day will help to nurture research mindset and interest towards sciences and technologies in our community, especially our younger generation. So, we would like to invite all secondary students to join our SCIENCE CASTLE in MALAYSIA next year to experience the wonderful world of science and technologies.

We would like to thank the Co-Organizer (Malaysia-Japan International Institute of Technology), Main partner (My Conceptual Robotics Sdn. Bhd.), teachers and participants who joined this SCIENCE CASTLE workshop and make it a successful program.

See you next time at SCIENCE CASTLE Workshop Day!
